'The Bones'

Fade Into The Background or Keep Showing Up?

After I made this image, it occurred to me that the green skull looked like it was fading into the background, the yellow was popping forward and the purple was just sort of 'in line' with it. It’s rather apropos because I have been going back and forth (for quite a while) about whether I should continue on the path that Skelly Chic has taken me. This year in particular has been difficult (I’m not just talking about sales, because being an artist is never for the money), but because I have been feeling as though Skelly Chic has possibly run its course. That said, I have been trying to figure out what my next step is, but it’s been a long and winding road (to be honest, I’m having a mid-life crisis; I’ll be 50 in December and I’ve just been feeling lost lately)!

This past weekend was the always-wonderful Elmwood Avenue Festival of the Arts (Buffalo, NY), a show I look forward to every year. Well, it did not disappoint, and I felt all the Buffalove (thank you to so many who stopped by to chat; it was an enlightening experience for me and I’m grateful)! While I was packing up my artist neighbor came by (I had been discussing my uncertainty about the future with him all weekend) and gave me some clarity: Keep showing up.

So that’s what I’m going to do. My short term plan is to discontinue the one-of-a-kind clay skeletons (I love them like my children but they are so labor intensive and I am a one-person business) and keep working on drawings and paper products. In time, I will figure out what my long-term plan is, and until then, keep doing the work, keep looking for opportunities that feel right, and keep the faith that I’ll figure it out.

Thanks to all of you for being so supportive of me these past six+ years; I hope you enjoy this month's free wallpapers for your desktop and phone! Click on the coordinating image below, then right click and choose ‘save as desktop background’, or save and download to your smartphone. Easy!

As it turns out, I chose the skull that pops forward for the phone version; I think it’s a sign :)

Happy September!

Leigh xo
